Introduction to Handbuilding with Clay
Start an adventure in clay with this five week class focused on
handbuilding. This class will provide the groundwork for developing
skills needed for creating functional and sculptural forms using pinch,
coil and slab construction methods. Surface decoration and firing
techniques will be explored. Classes are limited to six participants,
the class is for six sessions and meets once a week on Saturday from
10:00 to 12:00.
Level: Adult Beginning/Intermediate

Art of the
Brush
Learn the art of making your own handmade brushes suitable for
use with water based mediums and ceramic decoration. Beginning
and advanced techniques and construction methods will be taught
for making brushes from deer, skunk, horse hair, raccoon, goat
and ring tail cat. Demonstrations will involve step by step
instruction for making handles from bamboo, yucca, wood and
found objects.
This class will provide a hands on practical approach to brush
making from functional tools to works of art. Students will
begin with simple brushes and then move into making brushes with
advanced techniques. The class will explore the best materials
to produce handmade, A student should expect to make 15 to 20
brushes during the class.
Classes are limited to six participants.
Level: This course is open to all skills levels.

Artists in Residence Appalachian Center for Craft
The Appalachian Center for Craft is seeking an Artist in Residence (AIR) of exceptional talent to provide support in the Clay Department. The purpose of the AIR program is to provide a creative, residential environment for emerging professional artists and to broaden student and faculty awareness of new approaches and techniques. The Craft Center's mission is to offer the finest studio professional craft education through the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, Certificate of Accomplishment and workshop programs, and to provide a regional cultural resource through the workshop, exhibition, and gallery programs.
