Expressive Surfaces – Hands on Workshop

This workshop will be held October 23-25, 2009 in Kansas City, Missouri and is limited to 40 participants. It is hosted by Red Star Studios and the Potters Council which is introducing a new workshop format that will allow attendees a more intimate class size, hands-on learning, and three full days of studying techniques presented by two internationally renowned ceramic artists. Lorna Meaden (Colorado) and Mark Peters (North Carolina). Instruction, demonstrations and projects that will address any questions you may have regarding their surface techniques.

  • Lorna Meaden
    Lorna’s presentation will address ways to create pots that have a generous sense of volume and fluidity of line, using wheel thrown and altered porcelain. Her vocabulary of forms range from pots for daily use to atypical forms such as watering cans and spoons. Demonstrations will include altering pots on and off the wheel, in addition to using drawn patterns to handbuild spouts and handles. The pots will then be decorated using the slip inlay technique called mishima.
    You will learn the following:
    Creating wheel thrown and altered porcelain pots that have volume and fluidity of line
    Altering of pots on and off the wheel
    Using drawn patterns to handbuild spouts and handles
    Decorating using a slip inlay technique called Mishima
    Making a scoop, a spoon or ladle

Mark Peters
Mark is a wood fire potter who pays special attention to the “skin” of his pots. During this workshop he will demonstrate several ways to apply texture to wheel thrown pots. Stamped textures and faceted surfaces will be the focus. Mark will also show how to create interesting surfaces with an assortment of modified tools. Forms to be covered will include cups, bowls, plates, platters and pitchers. There will be discussions of the different firing processes and appropriate glazes that can enhance the surface of the pots.
You will learn the following:
Apply texture to wheel thrown pots
Stamped textures and faceted surfaces
Create interesting surfaces with an assortment of modified tools
Discuss firing processes and glazes that enhance
Make an assortment of clay stamps
Make wires for faceting
