Featured Artist: Linda Gossett, San Angelo Texas

by Vicki Hardin on June 5, 2011

lindaGThe ceramic pieces I am currently making are a direct response to my move to west Texas from Dallas. The calmness of these days has become fruitful as I see the work reflecting my new environment. I have looked outward at the scratchy, dry, and rusty landscape and found provocative detail and beauty. I am compelled to emulate this through distillation/translation into my art. Previous work erased human touch as part of the process. This work reflects my need to assert “hand made”, through mark making and low relief carving. The surfaces of these sculptural vessels are deliberately activated as I accentuate the scratches, gouges, and textures in the clay. By flooding the vessel with black slip, wiping it off, and then layering it with veils of color, the natural light of my surroundings emerges. These pieces portray my shift from the frenetic life I led to a quiet observation of breath.
