This exclusive exhibit showcases the work of ten master ceramic artists who explore the interaction of flame, smoke and clay.  Fire is their tool, inspiration and subject.  No glaze here.  This is naked clay.  Wheel thrown vessels are painted with combustibles such as sawdust and straw to evoke landscapes; porcelain pots are printed with the images of the foliage in which they are fired – a technique born during a tornado and reminiscent of deposits in the formation of fossils; sculptural forms are seemingly decorated by graphic lines drawn by pen but iC fact created by carbon.

This primitive, softly fired, experimental, quiet yet exciting, edge of the ceramic spectrum draws influence from the ancients.  Contemporary responses to this influence have never been exhibited as a theme before now.  The art of six  nationally known U.S. ceramicists will be shown alongside the work of English Jane Perryman, author of Naked Clay and Smoke Firing; Gabriele Koch, German born potter profiled by Tony Birks in a book by the same name; award-winning Austrian ceramist Roland Summer, showing for the first time in the U.S.; and Israeli ceramist and scientist Dr. Simcha Even-Chen.

Each artist chosen for this exhibition by curator and internationally exhibited artist Judith Motzkin sings a unique song of fire in this glazeless tradition… the mysterious swirl of fire… the prints of copper and salt … soft smoky clouds… sharp geometric patterns …and  much more.
