Solo exhibition based on a gentleman’s trophy room
July 31 – October 15, 2011
In his fourth solo exhibition at Ferrin Gallery,
Gordon Chandler installs a trophy room collection of antler-bearing animal heads made from reclaimed metal parts. While hunting for steel in junkyards and recycling stations, his eye is drawn to the shapes and surfaces of the parts he reclaims. His use of color is drawn from abraded paint surfaces including the signature green of John Deere farm machinery, reflective surfaces of road signs and license plates. Another series of deer head silhouettes are cut from rusty sheet metal showing the shapes and patterns that form during decay.
"Infusing a new, playful energy into the practice of recycling trash into art, Chandler aims at a wide audience. And to interest those who might otherwise avoid art designed for cognoscenti, he chooses subjects with a broad appeal. And at the same time that he recognizes the symbolic and historical dimensions of his imagery, he lends a genial parody to popular traditions, especially that particularly American penchant for collecting." Dorothy Joiner writer for World Sculpture News, Summer 2011.
